First Aid at Work – Requalification – with Equestrian-Specific Supplement

This comprehensive 2-day course covers a wide range of First Aid emergencies, enabling all participants to deal with an emergency situation with confidence in a prompt, safe and effective way.

In addition to this, should there have been any change to protocols during their initial qualification, then this will be updated.

All successful students will be issued with a new First Aid at Work Certificate, lasting for a period of 3 years.

This course will give participants a qualification to the highest level of First Aid, meeting the statutory requirements of the Health & Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981.

A maximum of 12 students can be accommodated on this course and all learners must be a minimum of 16 years of age.

This course is suitable for a wide variety or equestrians including:

Equine vets & farriers, Horse riders, producers, competitors, grooms, Dressage, SJ, XC  instructors/trainers, Eventing instructors/trainers, harness trainers/driving trainers, Polocrosse trainers/horseball trainers/ polo trainers, Showing instructors/ sidesaddle trainers, Western trainers, Vaulting trainers, Freelance instructors/trainers, Endurance trainers, Point to point/horse racing trainers, Equestrian organisations, groups and societies, Yards and stables, Equestrian colleges/education centres, Equestrian clubs – riding clubs, pony clubs and Hunts.

Course syllabus and assessment

A range of subjects is covered including:
  • Legalities, responsibilities and reporting
  • Dealing with an unresponsive casualty
  • Fractures and spinal injuries
  • Control of bleeding
  • Poisoning
  • Burns
  • Epilepsy
  • Resuscitation
  • Bandaging
  • Heart attacks
  • Head injuries
  • Chest injuries
  • Asthma
  • Stroke
  • Assessment of the situation
  • Shock (includingAnaphylaxis)
  • Choking
  • Eye injuries
  • Sprains and strains
  • Diabetes


Summative practical assessment is ongoing by the instructor each day.

A three year qualification certificate will be issued to the learner, subject to successful assessment. No external assessors are required. 

This course is accepted by the BHS for their register of instructors.
