This is a course in "Equestrian Specific" emergency first aid and is taught by health care professionals that deal with these equestrian related injuries on a daily basis. This course also adheres to the Health & Safety Executive requirements and provides delegates with a nationally recognised First Aid qualification.

This course is suitable for anyone working within the equestrian industry (Instructor, groom, eventer or horse owner) wishing to gain knowledge of emergency procedures and attain a recognised qualification in First Aid, and be eligible for the register of instructors. This course will give the participants a qualification to the highest level.

This comprehensive three-day course covers a wide range of First Aid emergencies,enabling all Participants to deal with an emergency situation with confidence in a prompt,safe and effective way.

A maximum of 12 students can be accommodated on this course and all learners must be a minimum of 16 years of age.

  • Assessment of the situation
  • Resuscitation
  • Dealing with an unresponsive casualty/rider
  • Shock (including Anaphylaxis)
  • Bandaging
  • Fractures and spinal injuries/immobilisation
  • Heart attacks
  • Choking
  • Control of bleeding
  • Head injuries
  • Helmet and body protector removal
  • Eye injuries
  • Poisoning
  • Chest injuries
  • Sprains and strains
  • Burns
  • Asthma
  • Diabetes
  • Epilepsy
  • Stroke

Certification

Assessment is on-going by the instructor, and a three year qualification will be issued to those who satisfy the criteria. In addition, the HSE strongly recommend that all students undergo an annual refresher programme of three hours.

This course is accepted by the BHS for their register of instructors.
